How Penumbra came about.

In 1989 aged 24 I was living in Co. Meath in Ireland with my 6 month old daughter Cia. Till this time I had worked in theatre, radio, film and T.V as an actress. Now caring for my daughter I needed to find things I was able to do from home.

One day driving in Dublin I heard a program on the radio. A nun was talking about her pen pal on Death row. I decided that this was something I would like to do. I have always had a morbid fascination with prison and its prisoner's.

I wrote my first letter soon after and from there a friend ship has developed.

About a year into the friend ship Jim (my pen pal) began to send drawings. They were finely detailed ink drawings. When I learnt that he is only allowed a pen filter; the inside of a ball point pen I became intrigued.

Threw out the years Jim has sent my daughter and I incredible drawings for Birthdays, Christmas, Mothers day etc. I began to feel a sadness for the fact that his work was hidden from the world and so decided to try and make a documentary including his work. That was over 5 years ago!

There have been various obstacles along the way. I have had to learn a lot about film production having never been to film school or class. I also taught my self to edit. So that I could edit the film. I have had no public funding.

I now live in Tooting with my 7 year old daughter. Jim and I still write. We have written well over 1000 letters.
